Ferras, “Speak in Tongues”

Ferras, “Speak in Tongues”

Jordanian-American Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, Ferras grew up in a small town in Illinois where he never felt like he really fit in. After his parents divorced, his father kidnapped him and brought him to Jordan, where he began playing a Casio keyboard and began writing his own songs.

Ferras’ first album, “Aliens and Rainbows”, featured the song “Hollywood’s Not America,” which was used as the exit song for season seven of “American Idol”. He has since co-written several songs for artists including Adam Lambert and The Veronicas.

With his smooth, sweet voice and his incredible songwriting ability, Ferras is a talent to watch. And what does openly gay Ferras look for in a mate? “A sense of humor. And a great ass”.

Game of Thrones: House Stark Theme

Game of Thrones: House Stark Theme

When winter comes for war,
You shall hear no Lions roar.
When winter forces you to yield,
No Stags shall graze upon the field.
When winter creeps upon you from the shadows,
No Roses shall bloom from the meadows.
When winter wreaks havoc on the land,
You can bet there’ll be no Snakes in the sand.
When winter brings to life all it finds grim,
The Krakens will freeze where they swim.
When winter sets and the land begins to shiver,
The Flayed Man will start to rot and wither.
When winter fights to the last sliver,
No more Trouts shall swim in the river.
When winter ravages and all despair,
No Falcons shall fly high in the air.
When winter shows you what happens when snow falls,
Not even Dragons Breath shall warm you in your halls.
When winter comes with all it’s might,
Only the Wolves shall howl in the night.

Death Cab for Cutie, “I Will Possess Your Heart”

Death Cab for Cutie, “I Will Possess Your Heart”

Death Cab for Cutie began as a solo project of Ben Gibbard in 1997, while he was the guitar player for the band Pinwheel and was recording under the name All-Time Quarterback. As Death Cab for Cutie, Gibbard released a cassette titled You Can Play These Songs with Chords the same year. The release was surprisingly successful, and Gibbard decided to expand the project into a complete band, recruiting Chris Walla (who had also worked on the cassette) as lead guitarist, Nick Harmer as bass player, and Nathan Good as drummer.

Death Cab for Cutie was officially formed at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, and lyrics from early songs include local references that were important to the band’s development. Many of the early songs were recorded in the basement of an Ellis Street home Gibbard lived in with several roommates in Bellingham.

Manu Chao, “El Contragolpe”

Manu Chao, “El Contragolpe” Live September 11, 2008

Had to get tired, sometimes,
of your lies.
I had to get tired of begging
Everyday.
But now I am happy.
I do not want any more.
Do not look for my forgiveness, leave me …
Now you will see what is to have broken wings,
Now you will see what is to suffer the loss.
What brought me thy wickedness has no name,
But now it mercilessly backlashed.

Cesaria Evora, “Besame Mucho”

Cesaria Evora, “Besame Mucho”

A song from one of the Great Singers:

I want to have you close to me
To see myself in your eyes
To see you next to me
Think that perhaps tomorrow
I will be far
So far away from you

Kiss me, kiss me a lot
As if tonight were
The last time

Kiss me, kiss me a lot
For I am afraid of having you
And losing you all over again.

Javier Fuentes-León, “Undertow”

“Undertow” Written and Directed by Javier Fuuentes-León

Miguel (Cristian Mercado, “Che: Part Two”) has lived his whole life in the small Peruvian fishing village where he now awaits the imminent arrival of his first child with his pretty wife, Mariela (Tatiana Astengo).  But Miguel keeps a large secret and when Santiago (Manolo Cardona, “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”), a painter shunned by the denizens of the town for being homosexual, disappears, Miguel’s very soul is pulled down by the “Undertow.”

Writer/director Javier Fuentes-León makes his feature film debut with this Peruvian-Colombian drama film chosen to represent his country for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.  Stunningly photographed by Mauricio Vidal, “Undertow” is about a ghost caught between his lover’s private shame and a town’s public traditions.  Mercado creates a complex man who remains likable even as he struggles with his own identity and machismo.

“Undertow” had been gestating since 1996, when the director Javier Fuentes-León wrote the very first scene. Originally conceived of as a supernatural revenge thriller about a fisherman having an affair with a prostitute, Javier decided to change it after coming out of the closet himself, in an attempt to explore more interesting themes and material.

The film shot in Cabo Blanco, Peru, won the World Cinema Audience Award in the Dramatic category at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S.A. Other Audience Awards included Cartagena, Montreal, Miami, Chicago, Utrecht, Lima, and Galway, as well as Jury Awards in Madrid, San Francisco, Seattle, Toulouse, and Philadelphia. It received a nomination as Best Latin American Film at the 2011 Goya Awards in Spain.

A great film. Javier Fuentes-Leon is a great writer and director. The photography and use of symbolism in this film both make this a movie that must be seen.

The Magnetic Fields, “All My Little Words”

The Magnetic Fields, “All My Little Words”

The Magnetic Fields (named after the André Breton/Philippe Soupault novel Les Champs Magnétiques) is an American indie pop group founded and led by Stephin Merritt. He is the group’s primary songwriter, producer and vocalist, as well as frequent multi-instrumentalist. While the musical style of the band is as malleable as Merritt’s songwriting, its songs are commonly attributed to pop genres such as synthpop, indie pop, and noise pop. The band is often cited as being recognizable by Merritt’s lyrics, often about love and often with irregular or neutral gender roles, that are by turns ironic, tongue-in-cheek, bitter, and humorous.

Known in music circles as a “gay synth-pop” group, The Magnetic Fields consist of four core members: one gay male artist (Merritt), one lesbian (Claudia Gonson), and two straight males (Sam Davol and John Woo).
