Banco de Gaia, “Ynys Elen”

Banco de Gaia, “Ynys Elen”, from the Album “Farewell Ferengistan”, 2006

Banco de Gaia is an electronic music band from England, formed in 1989 by Toby Marks.. The music of Banco de Gaia is best categorized as ambient dub, but Marks works to cross genres, often using Arabic and Middle Eastern samples against a bass heavy reggae, rock, or trance rhythm to produce deeply textured tracks that progress layer upon layer.

in 1994 Toby Marks released his first studio album “Maya” on Planet Dog records, which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize on its release. It was followed in 1995 by the critically acclaimed “Last Train to Lhasa”. Both albums reached No1 in the UK independent charts and featured in the national album chart top 40. In the following decade Banco De Gaia released “Live at Glastonbury”, “Big Men Cry”, “The Magical Sounds of Banco De Gaia”, “Igizeh” and “You Are Here”.

The Welsh name for Lundy Island, which lies off the North Devon coast in the Bristol Channel, is Ynys Elen. There is an ancient medieval Celtic chapel which was dedicated to Saint Helena situated on the ruins of Beacon Hill.

Sankai Juku Dance Troupe

Sankai Juku

Sankai Juku (山海塾?) is an internationally known butoh dance troupe. Co-founded by Amagatsu Ushio in 1975, they are touring worldwide, performing and teaching. As of 2010, Sankai Juku had performed in 43 countries and visited more than 700 cities. Amagatsu Ushio maintains that “butoh is a dialogue with the gravity,” while other dance forms tend to revel in escape from gravity. He sees his dance, in contrast, is based on “sympathizing or synchronizing” with gravity.

The all-male company’s work is performed by as few as six dancers eschewing the movements typical of modern or other dance forms. The performances are characterized by slow, mesmerizing passages, often using repetition and incorporating the whole body, sometimes focusing only on the feet or fingers. Sometimes minuscule movement or no movement is discernible and one is presented a meditative vision of statuesque postures or groupings.

Occasionally recognizable emotive postures and gestures are used, notably contorted body shapes and facial expressions conveying ecstasy and perhaps more often, pain and silent “shrieks.” Frequently, ritualized formal patterns are employed, smoothly evolving or abruptly fractured into quick, sharp, seemingly disjointed sequences whose symbolism or “meanings” are obscure.

If you hear Sankai Juku is performing in your area, buy tickets and go see them perform. It is an event that will become etched into your mind.

U Ram Choe

, Kinetic Sculptures, John Curtin Gallery, Australia, April 2012

In his first solo exhibition in Australia, U-Ram Choe from Korea presents his extraordinary kinetic sculptures, charting a path between art, science and cybernetic technologies. Finely engineered stainless steel, aluminium, and acrylic ‘bones’ provide the skeletal scaffolding for the ‘brains and muscles’ – CPUs and motors – which are assembled into captivating forms reminiscent of otherworldly flora and fauna, inviting the audience to imagine the evolution of life forms into the future.

Cesaria Evora and Marisa Monte, “E Doce Morrer no Mar”

This is a song written by Dorival Caymi who lived on the Bahia coast of Brazil.
The song tells the story of a fisherman who goes out to sea at night and dies, leaving his wife alone at home. His wife suffers with grief but thinks

“Doce more no mar, nas ondas verdes do mar.” (It is a sweet, graceful way to die, die in the green waves of the sea).

Uma música por dois classe mundial de cantores cujo vozes iluminar meu dia.

Getting Go: the Go Doc Project

Getting Go: the Go Doc Project, Director and Writer Cory Krueckeberg

College boy, Doc (Tanner Cohen, Were The World Mine) is obsessed with a well-known NYC go-go dancer, nicknamed Go (Matthew Camp). He befriends his hunky crush with the intention of shooting a movie about what it’s like to live in his skin. Camera in hand, he follows his subject across the city: into bars, onto rooftops and dance floors and ultimately his bedroom. But as they grow closer, flirtation blurs the line between subject and filmmaker until a steamy night together solidifies deeper feelings. Cory Kruekeberg’s explicit directorial debut explores the thrill and danger of getting exactly what you wished for.

Funny, sexy movie with a great story starring both Tanner Cohen and Matthew Camp. Nothing else needed in this great film.

My thanks to MandaBear83 for putting together this great clip with the song “Overture” from the “Sundark and Riverlight’ album by Patrick Wolf  (That song was a good choice!)
