Edward Kwang

Edward Kwang, Title Unknown, (Minotaur)

Vancouver-based artist Edward Kwong makes quasi-retro, noir-ish illustrations that reference old comic books, art deco, and other classic looking aesthetics. Full of angular, expressive figures, high-impact typography and often sepia-infused colors, his work captures entire narratives in single, meticulously-rendered images.

José Naranja

José Naranja: Sketchbooks

José Naranja beautifully detailed sketchbooks by collaging elements of photography, writing, stamps, and his own precise drawings of everything from poison mushrooms to a bird’s eye view of his dream studio. The ex-aeronautic engineer began working with sketchbooks after he discovered pocket-size Moleskine notebooks in 2005 and realized they were the perfect vessel to document his daily experiences and develop his wildest ideas. After 13 years of using the same style of notebook, Naranja now crafts his own by hand.

“It creates a special link between my journals and me. Drawings of calligraphy are just useful tools to express ideas They are the visible layer in the whole notebook as a piece, a mandala, and it’s the final artwork. Every detail in the process should be taken into consideration because I give the best effort. At the moment they have given me back only good news.”- José Naranja

The sketchbook artist also sells edited copies of his best work in a compilation called “The Orange Manuscript”, which you can find on his website.

Hendrick’s Gin

Hendrick’s Gin Poster

Mr William Grant with his seven sons and two daughhters built their family distillery in Scotland. In 1860 the Bennet Still used by the distillery was made by coppersmiths in London. Although few of these Bennet Stills are produced, they yield a spirit that is robust and flavorful. The John Dore and Company manufactured a Carter-Head Still for Hendrick’s in 1948 with a vapor-driven flavor basket atop a long neck, yeilding a subtle and delicate spirit. This type of still is quite rare today; only a few are known to exist.

Hendrick’s Gin has a rather unusual website which includes videos on the distilling process as well as the story of Horatio, the distilling pig. Enjoy. The Hendrick’s Gin website is:  https://us.hendricksgin.com
