Jacob Epstein, “Rock Drill” and *Torso in Metal from Rock Drill”

“Rock Drill” (c. 1913–1915) and the associated “Torso in Metal from Rock Drill” (c. 1913–1916) are Jacob Epstein’s most radical sculptures. “Rock Dril”l comprises a plaster figure perched on top of an actual rock drill. The combination of an industrial rock drill and the carved plaster figure makes the artwork an example of a ‘Readymade’ created at the same time as Marcel Duchamp’s “Bicycle Wheel” (1913). A 1974 reconstruction, by Ken Cook and Ann Christopher, is part of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery’s collection. “Rock Dril”l has been heralded as embodying the spirit of “radical Modernism more dramatically than any other sculpture, English or continental, then or since”.

Jacob Epstein (1880–1959) was an American-born sculptor who had moved to Europe in 1902, and taken British citizenship in 1911. Although Epstein was not officially a member of the Vorticists, not having signed the Vorticist Manifesto, the full-figure sculpture has also been hailed as the pinnacle of Vorticist art. Originally a positive statement, “Rock Drill” stood as a celebration of modern machinery and masculine virility. Wyndham Lewis described the sculpture as “one of the best things Epstein has done. The nerve-like figure perched on the machinery, with its straining to one purpose, is a vivid illustration of the greatest function of life.”

Alex Proyas, “Dark City”: Film History Series

“Dark City”: Director’s Cut: 2008; Directed by Alex Proyas

“Dark City” is a 1998 American neo-noir science fiction film directed by Alex Proyas. The screenplay was written by Proyas, Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer. The film stars Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, and William Hurt. Sewell plays John Murdoch, an amnesiac man who finds himself suspected of murder. Murdoch attempts to discover his true identity and clear his name while on the run from the police and a mysterious group known only as the “Strangers”.

The majority of the film was shot at Fox Studios Australia. It was jointly produced by New Line Cinema and Mystery Clock Cinema. New Line Cinema and New Line Home Video commercially distributed the theatrical release and home media respectively. The film premiered in the United States on February 27, 1998, and was a box office bomb, but received mainly positive reviews. The film was nominated for Hugo and Saturn Awards, and has become a cult classic. A director’s cut was released in 2008, restoring and preserving Proyas’s original artistic vision for the film.

A classic film: science fiction thriller in the style of film-noir. This film is a must see for sci-fi fans; the director’s cut is the version to watch.

Born in September of 1981, Daniel Alejandro Riveros Sepúlveda, known as Gepe, is a Chilean songwriter and singer. He has released five solo albums in addition to one as a member of the band “Tatter Dejao”. Considered a innovator of Chilean folk music, Sepúlveda combines the sensibilities of 1960s and 1970s Chilean folk music with a minimalist and electro-pop sound.

Preston Singletary

Glassworks by Preston Singletary

Preston had more than a decade of experience working on the teams for various master glass-artists before he began to make works that combined his own Tlingit heritage and traditional objects with blown glass. He has occupied a unique position as an aboriginal artist who trained solely in glass.

Singletary has traveled extensively to study international glass techniques, including visits to Sweden and Finland. He is considered the bridge-artist between glass blowing and Northwest Coast art, which are the two dominant art forms of the Pacific Northwest. Singletary has worked with many other aboriginal artists now interested in the glass medium and who have recognized the potential of the glass medium as a possible new direction.

Today, his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in such collections as the Seattle Art Museum, the new National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution, and the Museum of History and Art in Anchorage.

His solo-exhibition “Preston Singletary: Echoes, Fire, and Shadows” was unveiled at the Tacoma Museum of Glass in 2009 and is currently touring to major institutions across North America. This collection is documented in a book by the same name and is published in the United States by the Tacoma Museum of Glass and in Canada by Douglas & McIntyre Publishers.

The Young Professionals, “All of It But Me”, Featuring Anna F

The Young Professionals (also known as TYP or T¥P) is an Israeli electro pop band made up of producer Johnny Goldstein and singer/songwriter/producer Ivri Lider. The band mixes electronic sounds, guitars and acoustic percussion to create music described as alternative pop. In 2012, the duo released their debut album internationally as “9am to 5pm, 5pm to Whenever” (originally an Israeli 2011 release titled “09:00 to 17:00, 17:00 to Whenever”). “TYP D.I.S.C.O.”, a remake of the well-known hit by Ottawan is their first international hit single.
