Tinariwen, “Toumast Tincha”

Tinariwen, “Toumast Tincha” from the Album “Emmaar”

Tinariwen was founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, who at age four witnessed the execution of his father (a Tuareg rebel) during a 1963 uprising in Mali. As a child he saw a western film in which a cowboy played a guitar. Ag Alhabib built his own guitar out of a tin can, a stick and bicycle brake wire. He started to play old Tuareg and modern Arabic pop tunes. Ag Alhabib first lived in Algeria in refugee camps near Bordj Badji Mokhtar and in the deserts around the southern city of Tamanrasset, where he received a guitar from a local Arab man. Later, he resided with other Tuareg exiles in Libya and Algeria.

In the late 1970s Ag Alhabib joined with other musicians in the Tuareg rebel community, exploring the radical chaabi protest music of Moroccan groups like Nass El Ghiwane and Jil Jilala; Algerian pop rai; and western rock and pop artists like Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Boney M, and Bob Marley. Ag Alhabib formed a group with Alhassane Ag Touhami and brothers Inteyeden Ag Ablil and Liya Ag Ablil in Tamanrasset, Algeria to play at parties and weddings. Ag Alhabib acquired his first real acoustic guitar in 1979. While the group had no official name, people began to call them Kel Tinariwen, which in the Tamashek language translates as “The People of the Deserts” or “The Desert Boys.”

Twenty One Pilots, “Stressed Out”

Twenty One Pilots, “Stressed Out”

Twenty One Pilots is an American musical duo that originates from Columbus, Ohio. The band was formed in 2009 and consists of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. They put out two self-released albums, Twenty One Pilots in 2009 and Regional at Best in 2011, before being signed by Fueled by Ramen in 2012. They released their signed debut, Vessel, with Fueled by Ramen in 2013. Their second signed album, Blurryface, was released on May 15, 2015 through the same label.

Tyler came up with the band’s name while studying All My Sons by Arthur Miller, a play about a man who must decide what is best for his family after causing the death of 21 pilots during World War II because he knowingly sent them faulty parts for the good of his business. Tyler explains that this story of moral dilemma was the inspiration for the name of the band.

Fischerspooner, “The Best Revenge”

Fischerspooner, “The Best Revenge”

Fischerspooner is an electroclash duo and performance troupe formed in 1998 in New York City. The name is a combination of the founders’ last names, Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner. Influenced by retro electropop tendencies (arguably similar to Kraftwerk, early Pet Shop Boys, and Gary Numan) Fischerspooner uses a modern approach to programming.

Originally a duo formed by classically trained musician Warren Fischer and video-artist and experimental theater performer Casey Spooner for an impromptu rendition of their makeshift track “Indian Cab Driver” at the Astor Place Starbucks, the group grew to over 20 performers, most of whom are dancers and guest vocalists. “We started as a performance art piece about entertainment that ultimately became legitimate entertainment”, said Casey Spooner, when talking about the group’s origins.

Ólafur Arnalds, “No Other”, Featuring Amór Dan

Speak slowly, tongue of winter
Leak only strokes of bright moonlight

These streets I’ve weaved with hunger
Repeatedly with white sheet eyes
Quiver through the nights

Beneath a lonesome moon, I hear
This city croons to me, no other

With dark descending phantoms
Haunts hoary heads he longest wail

Their hollow beat of footsteps
Will follow me midst snowy trail

Beneath a lonesome moon, I hear
This city croons to me, no other
Releasing all too soon, I’m near
To her my heart gives in, no other
(The grieving streetlights monitored me well, since all was but frost)

Radical Face, “Welcome Home”

Radical Face, “Welcome Home”

Sheets are swaying from an old clothesline
Like a row of captured ghosts over old dead grass
Was never much, but we’ve made the most
Welcome home

Ships are launching from my chest
Some have names but most do not
If you find one, please let me know what piece I’ve lost

Peel the scars from off my back
I don’t need them anymore
You can throw them out or keep them in your mason jars
I’ve come home

Radical Face, “Holy Branches”

Radical Face, “Holy Branches”

Cooper chose the name Radical Face upon seeing it on a flyer. He later found out it was a plastic surgery flyer saying ‘Radical Face-Lift’ with the word ‘lift’ ripped off. One of his singles “Welcome Home” was played at the beginning of the first episode for the T.V. series “The Returned”.On November 16, 2010, Cooper released a six-track EP titled Touch The Sky, which serves as an appetizer for an announced trilogy of albums called Family Tree.

Leading up to the release of The Roots, The Bastards: Volume One EP was released track by track. The first album, titled The Roots, was released on October 4, 2011. In August The Roots was accidentally released to users outside of the US on iTunes. The Roots will be followed by The Branches and The Leaves. Clone, an album by Ben Cooper and Richard Colado, was announced to be released through Bear Machine Records and available by fall of 2012. After many delays, the first track of Clone, The Laboratory, was released on September 23, 2014.

The album was released in acts, Cooper adding one act per week to release the album. Each track has a full explanation of the act available at projectclone.com. ‘Laser-engraved crystal thumb drives’ were designed as an alternative medium for the album.

Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys!”.

Paco Peña, “Flamencura”

Paco Pena, “Flamencura”

Paco Peña is a Spanish flamenco composer and guitarist. He is regarded as one of the world’s foremost traditional flamenco players.

Born in Córdoba, Spain as Francisco Peña Pérez, Paco Peña began learning to play the guitar from his brother at age six and made his first professional appearance at twelve. Encouraged by his family, he left home and began performing throughout Spain as part of a government-sponsored folk music and dance program. This led to calls from professional flamenco companies in Madrid and the Costa Brava, where Peña established himself as a highly regarded accompanist to flamenco dance and singing.

Peña also created the Centro Flamenco Paco Peña in Córdoba, and was responsible for the founding of the now-celebrated annual Córdoba Guitar Festival, which has seen appearances by other flamenco greats such as Manolo Sanlúcar and Paco de Lucía. In 1997 Peña was named Oficial de la Cruz de la Orden del Mérito Civil by King Juan Carlos of Spain.

His most famous compositions include his Misa Flamenca (a flamenco Mass), and Requiem for the Earth, both of which have received great critical acclaim.
