Moving Through Eternity: Four Gifs by Florian de Looij

Florian de Looij first sat down with a copy of Photoshop when he was 12 years old and apparently he never got up. The Netherlands-based designer has been exploring digital animation and illustration ever since, and late last year started sharing his animation experiments on a Tumblr called FLRN GIF. Florian says he’s always been inspired by the likes of M.C. Escher and other artists working with optical illusions, something that has clearly influenced the direction of his design practice. He tries to make a new GIF each day.

Micael Reynaud

Freelance designer and stop-motion animator Micaël Reynaud creates animated GIFs. His process involves the use of video techniques like slit-scanning, time-lapse, and various forms of masking to create what he refers to as “hypnotic very short films.” Indeed many of these animations are pulled from fully realized videos which you can watch on his Vimeo channel.

Reynaud’s work has not gone unnoticed in the art world. His pigeon GIF was a finalist in the first Saatchi Gallery Motion Photography competition, and he recently won the 2014 Giphoscope International Art GIF contest.

Sachin Teng

There are many really gifted graphic artists who do work with gif illustrations. Sachin Teng is one. He mixes realistic styles with the cartoonish and and the glitched-out. Sachin Teng has illustrated for Adidas, Wired, and the New Yorker, among others. He is a freelance illustrator originally from New York but now based in Los Angeles.

The Light Cycle

The Light Cycle from Tron 2010

Both the 1982 and the 2010 Tron movies are great. The 1982 original was a big favorite of mine when it came out- way ahead of the special effects at that time. With all the advancement in computer generated imagery, the 2010 just pushed Tron one step further. See the original first, then the reboot.

Eral Inci

Animation: Gifs by Eral Inci

Eral Inci is one of the newest generation of animated artists.  He is also an accomplished photographer living in Turkey.  He is best known for producing cloned motion video and GIFs as a series of images involve public places taken at night with light motion.  Many of his works feature him as the animated subject.  His animations are seamless and ‘clone-like’.  He has created a variation of GIF animation coined “cloned motion video”.  In many of his GIF’s, the loops incorporate ‘cloned’ or a copied image (many times himself as the subject) in an endless loop.

Erdal Inci has created a hypnotic series of GIFs that takes the concept of cloned motion to a truly eerie level. Often using images of himself in mundane situations, Inci transforms simple snapshots into entrancing video loops.
