Soft Cell, “Tainted Love”, Long Version Live at Milan in 2002
Marc Almond rose to fame in the early 1980s as one half of the English New Wave duo Soft Cell. Their slowed-down, synthesized version of Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love” was a No. 1 hit in 17 countries and spent a record-breaking 43 weeks on the US Hot 100 charts. The track once again found itself on the charts, when in 2006, Rihanna sampled it on her No. 1 hit “SOS.”
In 1984 Soft Cell split amicably to focus on solo efforts and Almond went on to release numerous solo albums. In 1999, Almond released his autobiography, Tainted Life, in which he officially came out. Soft Cell reunited in 2002 and performed a string of concerts. 2010 marks Almond’s 30th year in music and he is gearing up for a new album and global tour.
Darren Hayes, “Darkness”, 2014
UK-based Australian singer-songwriter, Darren Hayes was the lead singer and media front man for pop duo Savage Garden, whose 1997 album Savage Garden was No. 3 in the United States and produced the hits “Truly, Madly, Deeply” and “I Want You.” Savage Garden stayed together for only two albums and released the US No. 1 hit “I Knew I Loved You” before Hayes went out on his own, changing his sound from soft pop-rock to a more electronic darker sound.
Hayes has three solo albums under his belt and another can be expected in 2011, produced by Lady Gaga’s mixer Robert Orton. Including his work with Savage Garden, Hayes has sold over 25 million albums worldwide. Although Hayes was married for six years to his childhood sweetheart, makeup artist Colby Taylor, they divorced in 2000 and he began coming out to his friends and his label in the early 2000’s. In 2006, he married his boyfriend of two years, Richard Cullen, in a civil ceremony in London.

Sigur Rós (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈsɪːɣʏr ˈroːus] ) is an Icelandic post-rock band from Reykjavík, which has been active since 1994. Known for its ethereal sound, frontman Jónsi Birgisson’s falsetto vocals, and the use of bowed guitar, the band’s music is also noticeable for its incorporation of classical and minimalist aesthetic elements. The band is named after Jónsi’s sister Sigurrós Elín.
Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Icelandic rock band Sigur Rós. His boyfriend Alex Somers has done much of the graphic design for Sigur Rós over the years. The two also perform together in the group Jónsi & Alex and released an album: Riceboy Sleeps.
Cazwell, “Ice Cream Truck”
Luke Caswell), better known as Cazwell, is an American rapper and songwriter. He has released the three studio albums Get Into It in 2006, Watch My Mouth in 2009 and Hard 2 B Fresh in 2014, along with several music videos and singles.
Cazwell is openly gay and his work focuses on gay and bisexual urban themes and content, and his music and videos are frequently played on Logo, a US cable channel geared towards the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. His music comprises the genres Hip Hop, Rap, dance, electronica, house and homo hop.
His debut single “All Over Your Face” was banned from Logo due to explicit lyrics and sexual imagery portrayed in the music video, directed by Francis Legge and edited by Cayle Ryan Pietras.
Festo Exo-Hand
Festo is a German industrial control and automation company based in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany.[1] Festo is an engineering-driven company that sells pneumatic and electric transducers primarily to the automation industry. They are using their Bionic Learning Network program to explore ideas and initiatives which go beyond the core business of automation and didactics and may lead to future products and product areas, currently these projects involve their new line of pneumatic actuators. Some of these projects are the Aqua Jelly, AquaPenguin, the Aqua Ray, Airic’s arm, the Airacuda and SmartBird.
The ExoHand from Festo is an exoskeleton that can be worn like a glove. The fingers can be actively moved and their strength amplified; the operator’s hand movements are registered and transmitted to the robotic hand in real time.
Echo and the Bunnymen, “The Killing Moon”
“The Killing Moon” is a song by the band Echo & the Bunnymen. It was released on 20 January 1984 as the lead single from their 1984 album, Ocean Rain. It is one of the band’s highest-charting hits, reaching number nine in the UK Singles Chart, and often cited as the band’s greatest song.
“The Killing Moon” was featured in the original theatrical version of the opening sequence of the cult film “Donnie Darko” and it was on the “Blood & Chocolate” werewolf film soundtrack covered by The Distants. However, in the director’s cut version of the film, the song is replaced by INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart”.[6]
Sylvan Esso, “Play It Right”
Sylvan Esso is an American indie pop duo based in Durham, North Carolina. Formed in 2013, the band consists of singer Amelia Meath (of Mountain Man) and producer Nick Sanborn (of Megafaun). The duo released their eponymous debut album on Partisan Records on May 12, 2014. They made their network television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on July 9, performing the single “Coffee”.
Lead singer Amelia Meath, who was at the time involved with her trio, Mountain Man, created the vocals to the song called Play It Right. She later met electronic music producer Nick Sanborn in Milwaukee at the Cactus Club, performing at the time solo as Made of Oak, and asked him to make a rendering of her single, Play It Right, in his own way.
Klaus Nomi, “Total Eclipse”, Live 1981
Klaus Sperber (January 24, 1944 – August 6, 1983), better known as Klaus Nomi, was a German countertenor noted for his wide vocal range and an unusual, otherworldly stage persona.
Nomi was known for his bizarrely visionary theatrical live performances, heavy make-up, unusual costumes, and a highly stylized signature hairdo which flaunted a receding hairline. His songs were equally unusual, ranging from synthesizer-laden interpretations of classical music opera to covers of 1960s pop standards like Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” and Lou Christie’s “Lightnin’ Strikes”. He is remembered in the US as one of David Bowie’s backup singers for a 1979 performance on Saturday Night Live.
Nomi died in 1983, alone in Manhattan’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center at the age of 39, as a result of complications from AIDS. His ashes were spread over New York City.
Portishead, “Roads”, Live at Roseland New York
Portishead are an English band formed in 1991 in Bristol. They are named after the nearby town of the same name, eight miles west of Bristol. Portishead consists of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley, while sometimes citing a fourth member, Dave McDonald, an engineer on their first records.
Their debut album, Dummy, was met with critical acclaim in 1994. Two other studio albums were issued: Portishead in 1997 and Third in 2008.
Linkin Park, “In The End”
Linkin Park is an American rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Formed in 1996, the band rose to international fame with their debut album Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2005 and multi-platinum in several other countries.[1] Their following studio album Meteora continued the band’s success, topping the Billboard 200 album chart in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.[2] In 2003, MTV2 named Linkin Park the sixth-greatest band of the music video era and the third-best of the new millennium.[3
Kings of Leon, “Use Somebody”
Kings of Leon is an American rock band that formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2000. The band is composed of brothers Caleb Followill, lead vocals, rhythm guitar; Nathan Followill, drums, percussion, backing vocals; and Jared Followill, bass guitar, backing vocals; with their cousin Matthew Followill, lead guitar, backing vocals.
The band’s early music was blend of Southern rock and blues influences, but it has gradually expanded throughout the years to include a variety of genres and a more alternative, arena rock sound. Kings of Leon achieved initial success in the United Kingdom with nine Top 40 singles, two BRIT Awards in 2008, and all three of the band’s albums at the time peaked in the top five of the UK Albums Chart.
