Calendar: November 24

A Year: Day to Day Men: 24th of November

Lion King

Mont Granier is a limestone mountain located between the departements of Savoie and Isere in France. It lies in the Charteuse Mountains range of the French Prealps. At 900 meters tall, Mont Granier has one of the highest cliffs in France.

In the year 1248, in the evening of November 24, a mass of limestone resting on marls slid into the valley, causing a massive landslide that destroyed many villages. This event created the sheer 700 meter north face of the mountain. Five villages were partly or completely destroyed by the avalanche: Cognin, Vourey, Saint-Andre, Granier, and Saint-Perange. Modern estimates calculate about 1000 local residents died due to this night time landslide, making it one of the biggest and deadliest landslides in Europe.

The Glory Window

The Glory Window, Stained Glass, Dallas, Texas

The “Glory Window” is located inside the public, spiral-shaped Chapel of Thanksgiving. The Chapel of Thanksgiving is the spiritual center of Thanks-Giving Square open to visitors of all faiths. The spiraling shape rises 90 feet  above street level, suggesting the infinite upward reach of the human spirit.

The Chapel’s design takes its inspiration from the Great Mosque in Samarra, Iraq, (itself derived from the square, spiral Pillar of Gor in Persia). The entrance to the chapel is at the end of a 125 foot bridge that runs over a cascading waterfall. The chapel ceiling contains the stained glass “Glory Window”, one of largest horizontally mounted stained-glass pieces in the world. The 73 panels of faceted glass were designed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres, France, featuring warmer and brighter colors as the spiral reaches its apex in the center.

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Herman Melville: “The Sky Seemed A Gray Surtout”

“The morning was one peculiar to that coast. Everything was mute and calm; everything gray. The sea, though undulated into long roods of swells, seemed fixed, and was sleeked at the surface like waved lead that has cooled and set in the smelter’s mould. The sky seemed a gray surtout. Flights of troubled gray fowl, kith and kin with flights of troubled gray vapors among which they were mixed, skimmed low and fitfully over the waters, as swallows over meadows before storms. Shadows present, foreshadowing deeper shadows to come.”

Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund

Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund, “Two Sides of a Coin”, Oil on Canvas

Per Elof Nilsson Ricklund was born in 1987, in Örnsköldsvik, a small town in northern Sweden. Surrounded by vast mountains, also painted by his grandparents, and inspired by the magical atmosphere of the landscape and people around him, Per Elof began drawing at a young age. He became interested in conveying stories that were more than the visual experience he actually perceived. Discovering that his eyes weren’t sharp enough to recreate a convincing reality, he began searching for people who were willing to share their knowledge, first by studying illustration, and later the 19th century masters. It was then that he understood only in nature would he find a way to convey a story as truthfully as he perceived it.

He began his studies at The Florence Academy of Art in 2007, where he was awarded Best Figure Painting of the Year for 2010 and 2011, as well as Honorable mention for Advanced Portrait Painting in 2011. By his second year he began teaching Anatomy in Mölndal before moving to Florence to direct the Anatomy and Ecorché programs there.

“When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest. The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.”
Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast
