The Nebra Sky Disc

The Nebra Sky Disc

The Nebra Sky Disc is a bronze disk of around 30 centimetres (12 in) diameter and a weight of 2.2 kilograms (4.9 lb), with a blue-green patina and inlaid with gold symbols. These are interpreted generally as a sun or full moon, a lunar crescent, and stars (including a cluster interpreted as the Pleiades. Two golden arcs along the sides, marking the angle between the solstices, were added later. A final addition was another arc at the bottom surrounded with multiple strokes (of uncertain meaning, variously interpreted as a Solar Barge with numerous oars, as the Milky Way, or as a rainbow).

The disk is attributed to a site near Nebra, Saxony-Anhalt, in Germany, and associatively dated to about 1600 BC. It has been associated with the Bronze Age Unetice culture.

The Nebra sky disk features the oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos worldwide. In June 2013 it was included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Registry and termed “one of the most important archaeological finds of the twentieth century.”

Ane Brun, “Last Breath”

Ane Brun, “Last Breath”, Album “How Beauty Holds the Head of Sorrow”, 2020

If you do not know about Ane Brun, Check out her music. This Norwegian artist is in my list of top ten female vocalists and song writers. I have been a fan ever since hearing her sing “The Opening”, the theme song of “Wallander”, one of the better detective series.

“Wallander” is available in an British version with Kenneth Branagh, which is a good series. However, I favor the original Swedish series starring Henning Mankell, which is less ‘polished’ and, to me, more intense in emotion.

Tsutomu Nihel

Manga Architecture by Tsutomu Nihel

Tsutomu Nihel, born in 1971, is a Japanese manga artist. His cyber-punk-influenced artwork has gained a strong cult following. He has a relatively large community of fans overseas where his manga “Blame!”, “Kinghts of Sidonia”, and “Biomega” were published by Vertical Incorporated and Viz Media.

Nihel’s first study was architecture: this influence has shown up in his manga work of depictions of huge structures. This is one of the general themes that make his manga unique.

Lagunilla Figure

Lagunilla Figure of a Man, John Bourne Collection, Walters Art Museum

Lagunillas figures often portray men, usually in a seated position with elbows resting on bent knees and forearms crossed on top of each other. The torso leans forward, and the face gazes downward. This figure’s loins are wrapped in a relatively wide hip cloth of unadorned fabric. He wears a textile or plant fiber triple-strand band around his head, a forelock of hair falling below the band. His face is extensively painted with black designs, including masklike half circles around his eyes and whisker-like motifs extending outward from the corners of his mouth.
